How do you bring out the best in others?
This is the fundamental question of coaching. Great coaches are masters at bringing out the best in others. It’s what coaching is all about.
Different sorts of coaches have various other skills as well. When someone coaches a particular subject area, like a ballet coach, it’s important to know that subject area deeply. In the Hornick School of Coaching, we train coaches for certification by the International Coaching Federation. The certification training involves learning a variety of “methods” for helping life coaches bring out the best in others.
But, before any of that “specialized” training, there are the fundamentals. What are the fundamentals of bringing out the best in others?
That’s what we cover in this seminar.
They include seeing the possibility in others, seeing them as capable, seeing them as deserving, creating a relaxing and psychologically safe space, helping them see the primacy of making choices, taking responsibility, and moving into action, understanding how desire is variable and can be scaffolded, knowing the fundamental importance and absolute power of imagination and creativity, and recognizing that people really do change their whole lives long. You can read a more detailed discussion of these elements on the Hornick School of Coaching website.
The program used to be called Fundamentals of Coaching, but after running it several time, it became clear that becoming better at bringing out the best in others was of fundamental importance to all people. So, we changed the name to simply The Fundamentals Seminar. Adding the word Seminar also helped people understand that this program is not a passive experience. You can’t have this kind of experience from reading a book or watching a video.
A curious and beautiful thing about what it takes to bring out the best in others is that you already know how to do it. We all do. It’s a wisdom that we all have inside us. This seminar is not so much about “teaching” you to get better at bringing out the best in others. It’s about having conversations in which you clarify (and sometimes discover) what you already know. This is a profoundly gratifying experience. The process is part of why people enjoy the seminar so much.
That kind of clarification doesn’t “teach” you much at all. What it does is allow you to “transform.” When the seminar is over, you perceive things differently. You notice different things. Your enhanced perception translates into your bringing out the best in others more powerfully than you had before. It doesn’t matter how good you are at bringing out the best in others before the seminar, after you experience The Fundamentals Seminar, you will be better.

This program helped me examine a work situation with a focused lens, allowing purchase, perspective, and possible avenues of experimentation. In the process, I learned a great deal about myself and strategies I can adopt to become a better version of myself as well as acting to bring out the best in others. Best of all, I connected with caring classmates to explore a new landscape together under the direction and care of Josh. I would highly recommend this program and Josh as a teacher.
I would strongly recommend this program to individuals who are looking to improve their people management and supervisory skills as well as to people who are considering doing any kind of coaching (e.g., life, leadership, athletic).
This is a tremendous class for anyone interested in coaching - as a growth path for themselves or as a beginning step into the profession. Josh is a delightful leader and his love for this work is infectious. The coaching work he demonstrated in the class was exciting and surprising; he is clearly a master.
Josh energized us towards a fun and heartfelt exploration of how to show up more fully to each other and ourselves. We learned skills that we could practice immediately in our lives. So many of us returned to class with heartwarming stories demonstrating the value of our learning.
